The global abundance and size distribution of lakes, ponds, and impoundments

چکیده
One of the major impediments to the integration of lentic ecosystems into global environmental analyses has been fragmentary data on the extent and size distribution of lakes, ponds, and impoundments. We use new data sources, enhanced spatial resolution, and new analytical approaches to provide new estimates of the global abundance of surface-water bodies. A global model based on the Pareto distribution shows that the global extent of natural lakes is twice as large as previously known (304 million lakes; 4.2 million km2 in area) and is dominated in area by millions of water bodies smaller than 1 km2. Similar analyses of impoundments based on inventories of large, engineered dams show that impounded waters cover approximately 0.26 million km2. However, construction of low-tech farm impoundments is estimated to be between 0.1% and 6% of farm area worldwide, dependent upon precipitation, and represents .77,000 km2 globally, at present. Overall, about 4.6 million km2 of the earth’s continental ‘‘land’’ surface (.3%) is covered by water. These analyses underscore the importance of explicitly considering lakes, ponds, and impoundments, especially small ones, in global analyses of rates and processes. Although lakes are of global importance, most analyses of functional processes in freshwater ecosystems have either emphasized regional similarities (Thienemann 1925; Naumann 1929; Kalff 2001) or have adopted an ecosystemspecific emphasis. The few global analyses of lacustrine processes have been limited because knowledge of the number and size distribution of lakes has been incomplete (Alsdorf et al. 2003; Lehner and Döll 2004). Does the Pareto distribution adequately describe the size-distribution of lakes?
When ; it comes to evaluating lakes at regional and global scales, a key need is accurate estimates of the abundance and size-distribution of lakes, which are usually described with the Pareto distribution. We demonstrate the considerable uncertainty that truncation in the lower tail of the Pareto distribution introduces into lake abundance estimates and the selection of the lake size-distribut...

Abstract Beside knowledge on primary production and food webs, species composition and density of phytoplankton in shrimp culture ponds are an important issue in relation with shrimp diets and production in the ponds. In order to provide an updated information about phytoplankton community in shrimp culture ponds, this study was carried out to determine species composition and abundance of phy...
متن کاملDistribution of the topmouth gudgeon, Pseudorasbora parva (Cyprinidae:Gobioninae) in Lake Eğirdir,Turkey
Topmouth gudgeon, Pseudorasbora parva was firstly recorded in Europe in southern Romania and Albania. This species was firstly determined from the Thrace region of Turkey in 1984 in the River Meriç. In this research, samples collected from four different stations between March 2010 and June 2011. A total of 81 P. parva individuals were caught by using drift-nets with a mesh-size of 10 mm, and ...

Plastic pollution has universally known accumulated in all environment compartments and accelerating threat to the sustainability of earth. Field survey to examine the occurrence of microplastics in ancient sea water evaporation technology of ponds at Pallengu-Jeneponto, was conducted. From this sea salt producing ponds, samples of water, sediment and freshly harvested salts were collected. Six...
متن کاملBenthic Macrofaunal Communities in Partially Impounded Salt Marshes in Delaware: Comparisons with Natural Marshes and Responses to Sediment Exposure
This two-part study examined the benthic macrofaunal community in Delaware salt marsh impoundments having partial tidal restriction. The first part compared abundance, diversity, and taxonomic composition in three habitat types in impoundments—creeks, vegetated creek banks, and ponds—to those found in natural marshes. Impoundment effects were present but were habitat-specific. Abundances were h...
